Dr. Stephen Mitchell is a 1995 graduate of UAB School of Dentistry. In 2000, he finished a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and in Cariology, and then studied maternal transmission of oral bacteria to complete a Master of Science in Oral Biology. Dr. Mitchell joined the UAB Department of Pediatric Dentistry faculty in 2000 where he served as Director of Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry for 18 years. He currently serves as Director of Sparks Dental Clinic, a dental clinic serving the developmentally and intellectually disabled population. Dr. Mitchell is ABPD certified and serves as the Alabama Public Policy Advocate for the AAPD. He also serves Alabama Medicaid Agency's Dental Task Force, Alabama Dental Association’s Medicaid Work Group and the Oral Health Coalition of Alabama as president. He is published in the areas of oral immunology, maternal bacterial transmission, clinical pulp therapy, and dental education. Most importantly, he is a married to Dr. Sonya Mitchell, who directs the International Dental Program at UAB, and father to Katherine and Reace.
